History of Fort Worth
The fertile land on the banks of River Trinity has been a favorite haunt for hunting since the time of the Native Americans, but it proved to be suited as the home of settlers. In 1849, Camp Worth was established as a military outpost and it culminated in the creation of Fort Worth. The city can be traced to a settlement established by Jonathan Bird in the year 1840. While Birdville was the seat of Tarrant countu, many settlers moved into the Fort Worth outpost. Fort Worth saw many firsts:
- Captain Julian Field established the first flour and corn mill
- Captain Ephraim Dagger set up the first hotel
- Dr Carroll Peak set up practice as the first physician in Fort Worth
- John Peter Smith opened its first school
In 1873, Fort Worth had a population of 500 when it was decided this city should incorporate and Dr. Burts was elected as its mayor.
Its first railroad was established in 1877. Fort Worth is popularized by the slogan Where The West Begins
During the 1870s, the first National Bank was established in Fort Worth. Fort Worth’s first great industry was meat packing.

Amon Carter Museum of American Art
American art before 1945 is showcased in this museum. Leading artists such as Josh Singer Sargent, Alexander Calder and Charles Russell. You can get a visual treat just by looking at the exhibits. The museum is open from 10 am to 5pm from Tuesday to Saturday, till 8 pm on Thursdays and Sunday (noon- 5pm)

Stockyards
Located in Fort Worth, USD, Stockyards is where saloons, steakhouses and western wear shops abound in plenty. There is a self guided audio walking tour for just USD 12. There is also a walking tour leaving from Stockyard Station that lasts for 90 minutes.

Fort Worth Zoo
This is one of the most popular zoos in the state and home to more than 650 species and 5000 inhabitants. This includes endemic and endangered species. The zoo charges a fee of USD 12 for adults and 9 for children along with parking charges of USD 5. Museum opens from 10 in the morning to 5 in the evening all 7 days of the week.

Museum of Science and History
Check out the fossils, dinosaurs and extremely exciting things to do at this museum including shows at the IMAX theater. Adults get charged USD 14 for entry while children get charged USD 10. Opening hours are from 10 am to 5 pm every weekend and weekday.

National Cowgirl Museum
This museum is large and spacious. It captures the lives and world of cowgirls in American society. From the costumes to the films, this is a museum that combines fun with education. Best Time to Visit Fort Worth
The best time to visit Fort Worth is during the fall in the months between November and September when the Texas State Fair is on and temperatures are manageable. Months between March and May are also good for visits but the cowboys football season during this time tends to create spiraling hotel prices. Summer however, marks the popular season for Fort Worth. DFW experienced all 4 seasons with highs in the 50s and lows in the 60s during winter. In the summers, temperature is in the 90s and there is heavy humidity.
